SPOTLIGHT: Scotty Russell's MK1 Golf

Scotty’s MK1 was the first car saw upon entering Ultimate Dubs in Telford.

Sat nearest the stage, this Mars Red MK1 looks simple on the surface but, once you’re drawn in, it rewards an eye for detail. Scotty was getting the car ready for the weekends show but was able to give us a quick tour of the build.

It’s a classic look and a winning formula that never gets old, dropped on BBS RM and factory brightwork.

The engine bay features a MK2 Golf 16v ‘KR’ engine, a period-correct engine swap that looks absolutely at home in the nose of the MK1.

Scotty’s uses Air Lift Performance threaded body struts and the 3P air management system to drop the iconic MK1 shape closer to the floor and give the classic build a modern twist.

Inside, modern seats and up-to-date tartan trim give the car a unique look.

It’s just enough to bring the comfort up to modern standards, but without being at odds with the exterior. We love the way Scotty has integrated the 3P controller into the center console. There’s even a booster seat for his young one, trimmed to match the rest of the interior.

While it’s easy to get carried away seeking out the latest and greatest supercar at shows, there’s something so refreshing about seeing builds like this, too.

Builds like Scotty’s Golf are a total labor of love and always takes extra work to get just right. I mean, they’re not making any more MK1 Golfs any time soon, so there’s often a lot of restoration work required before owners even gets the chance to put their own stamp on the car.
